To reduce and prevent where possible the unexpected deaths of babies and young children.

To continue to fund and instigate research into both the causes and prevention of SIDS and unexpected deaths of babies and young children.

To provide evidence based advice to parents to maximise the life chances and health of their babies and young children.

To provide evidence based knowledge to professionals , policy makers and the media to reduce the rate of unexpected deaths of babies and young children and promote child health .

Tips to reduce risk of SIDS :

• Place babies on the backs every time they go to sleep.avoid sleeping on the stomach and sides.
• Use firm sleep surface - a firm crib mattress covered by a fitted sheet is recommended.
• Room sharing without her sharing is recommended.
• Keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the crib to reduce the risk of SIDS ,suffocation and strangulation.
• Pregnant women should receive regular prenatal care .
• Avoid smoke exposure during pregnancy and after birth .around one third of all SIDs deaths could be prevented if maternal smoking could be eliminated.
• Avoid alcohol and illicit drugs during pregnancy and after birth.
• Breast feeding is recommended.
• Avoid over heating of baby.
• Infant should be immunised.
