The Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) put the responsibility of overpriced hospital charges on the public's radar. Instead of forcing hospitals to reduce charges, a greater plan emerged. The price transparency initiative mandated that hospitals and clinics had to put their charges online so patients could see and compare. With more being paid out of pocket due to insurance changes, the public has been interested in shopping prices (and quality, which is also publically reported). This public access drove hospital charges down. Inequities still exist.
What are the similarities and differences between the ACA and the Price Transparency project?
In Price transparency patients can clearly see the price of a treatment and determine how much they will out-of-pocket before recieving care or when doctors tell their patient the cost of a service.Researchers found that when patients are educated on price differences between MRI facilities and presented with different provider options, they chose the least expensive option.
Affordable Care reform the health insurance market place and prohibit insurers from denying coverage or charging people more when sick.it also improves benefits by preventive coverage with no cost -sharing,minimum benefit package, limit out of pocket spending and increase medical loss ratio
