After working six years as an assistant health services manager at Johnson Hospital, Trudy Leeson was promoted to Health Services Administrator of the Center. Trudy was very excited as she recently earned her degree in Health Service Management making her eligible to apply for the position. Trudy can now take the lead and put to use all of her years of study. Following a general meeting at which her promotion was announced, Trudy found herself surrounded by three longtime coworkers who had also applied for the job and were her classmates while obtaining their Health Service Management degrees. They offered their congratulations and made other observations and comments.

“I’m really happy for you,” said Deb Martin. “This sounds like a terrific career step, one that we were all looking forward to. I suppose this means our carpool is affected, since your hours are bound to be a lot less predictable from now on.”

Barbara Leonard said, “And I guess that shoots the lunch bunch and the bowling league as well. Management commitments, you know.” The emphasis on management was subtle though undeniable, and Trudy was not at all sure that she was pleased with what she was hearing.

Jim Chen offered, “Well, maybe now we can get some action on a few age-old problems and make the necessary changes around here. Remember, Trudy, you used to gripe about these things as much as the rest of us.”

“We’ve all complained a lot,” Barbara agreed. “That’s been sort of a way of life around here.” The tone of her voice shaded toward a suggestion of coolness and her customary smile was absent when she added; “Now Trudy’s going to be in a position where she can do something, so let’s hope she doesn’t forget who her friends are.”

Jim and Deb looked quickly from Barbara to Trudy. For an awkward 10 seconds or so nobody spoke. At last someone passing by said something to Trudy, and as Trudy turned to respond, Deb, Barbara, and Jim went their separate ways.

Describe how you believe Trudy will need to proceed in establishing herself as the legitimate possessor of managerial authority of the center?

If you were Trudy, how do you believe your promotion would affect your relationships with your former coworkers?

What are the possible disadvantages that might present themselves to Trudy because she has long been a member of this group?

Identify the possible advantages Trudy might enjoy in becoming manager of a group of which she has long been a member?

Answer #1

Trudy should make her co-workers understand her needs of the job and its necessity. She should share her feelings of missing out of happy moments with her friends and assure them that let it continue outside of the work. But she clearly remains them that she should be truthful to her position and will take appropriate actions if anyone not worked on their standards. She makes her friends understand that she can't do all the things as before.

Trudy should believe and accept the there will be little hard in getting of jobs be done by her coworkers. It is normal that her coworkers will expect lenient from Trudy in doing some works or ask of escapism. Trudy should balance her relationship and get her work done.

Trudy will have some disadvantages as not been in a member of coworkers group. Coworkers will be lenient in their work. This makes Trudy misuse her authority and power. It increases the burden of work on her head.

Trudy has been with her coworkers for long before, it is easy for her to understand her coworker's personalities and working style. It helps her to get work done easily and on time.
