Diabetes Mellitus diagnoses need to meet certain criteria:

Fasting plasma glucose >= 126 mg/dL; OR
Symptoms (polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss); AND
Random plasma glucose >= 200 mg/dL; OR
A1C >= 6.5%

Answer: If it is known that a particular population is prone to the diabetes, they should at early stage take action to prevent the disease. It is know that prevention is better than cure. Person should take action before the clinical criteria of type 2 diabetes is met.

Some of the factors that can lead to Type Ii diabetes are:

  • Excessive weight or obesity
  • Consumption of sugar
  • Consumption of tobacco
  • Intake of caffeinated beverages
  • Smoking
  • Alcoholism

The three changes patients can make to prevent or address Type Ii diabetes mellitus are;

  • Maintenance of health weight
  • Exercising
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Quit smoking
  • Reduce intake of Caffeinated beverages
  • Intake of healthy diet and adapting healthy lifestyle
