The gram stain that caused diarrhea in Carol, 68 year old woman is Salmonella . It is a rod shaped, gram-negative bacterium that causes gastroenteritis in humans. The infection is transmitted through ingestion of food and water contaminated with feces.  The main symptoms of this disease includes a) diarrhea b) fever c) vomiting and d) abdominal cramps. It is not consider to be a fatal disease but it can leads to severe dehydration because of excess amount of fluid and electrolyte balance because of diarrhea. Diarrhea is often mucopurulent ( containing mucus and pus) and bloody. Because of blood in stools, Carol diagnosed with anemia and also loss of heavy fluids and electrolytes and fatigue she had fluctuations in her blood sugar levels.
