'As the twig is bent so grows the tree'

It is a proverbial saying regarding the influence of childhood's habits on the personality and future of a person. Pope Alexander expressed the same idea of 'A man may bend a wande while it is green and make it straight though it be never so crooked'.( 16 century saying) He said in his epistles that" Tis education forms the common mind, just as the twig is bent the tree is inclined(1732). Steven Robles again quoted the saying in a different way that is' As the twig is bent , so grows the tree'. These all sayings commonly have one meaning that early infuences have a permanent effect on a man's character.

Lifespan Human development

The above said folktheory can be applied in human lifespan development as there are evidence around us, in ourself and also various Psychologists studied on it. According to Erick Erickson(1902-1904), there are eight stages of development in a human lifespan( Psychosocial Theory). Each stage' s failure or achiement of task influences a man's personality.

Sigmund Freud's Psychosexual stages explains abou five stages of development. Few examples:

Oral stage: the infant seeking pleasure orally. If the caretakers are taking proper care, child will develop a sense of trust. That trust on others will have in the child's life even he grows and becomes an adult. If the child is not developed trust or dependency that insecurity will be there for through out his life .

Anal stage: if the toilet training happened properly in the future he or she will be competent, productive adults.

After the next stage ( phallic stage) child will be in latent stage. Fixation at this stage of social skill development, child may show immaturity and inability to fullfill social relationship and interactions when he become an adult.

A man's childhood habits stick with him for years and continue to influence him into his adulthood.
