The idea of smart cards started in the 1960’s but the ideas came to force after a decade. Many researchers and industries were researching on the idea to integrate micro chips on plastic cards. France and Japan were the pioneers in this technology and filed some patents for this technology. The French started trials using this smart card technology in banking, mobile communications. Some countries issued ATM bank cards to the customers after conducting some trials successfully. Countries like USA, Turkey started using smart card technology in marketing cards and drivers license. This technology was also used in casinos. In the 1990’s prepaid cards, smart card enabled telephones, micro chip containing bank cards, health cards were started. The mobile phone boom started in this decade and millions of people world wide started to use these smart cards. Many countries started adopting smart cards in citizen cards in the later years. These cards completely changed the way money transactions were made.

The smart card technology has revolutionised the working and caused a dramatic increase in the opportunities for many industries and services. The industries which have successfully implemented and utilised this smart card technology are banking industry, telecommunications industry, health care industry. The telecommunication industries include mobile phone as well as television industries. These industries use the smart card technology for identification, storage of information, payments etc.

The stored value means there is a certain amount of money stored on the card. This amount stored on the card can be used to obtain services from any institution, even health care institution. This card can be used without interfering with the bank details or the card holder as the money is already paid during the issuing of card. This can be used to pay for the health services. This reduces chances of being robbed or loosing money. They help in governments to obtain information about the individual. They can help in obtaining statistical data for research purposes without compromising on the privacy which can be used for betterment of the mankind. The usage of smart cards in education containing can put together all the info about the students and their qualifications. It’s application in health care, telecommunications and transportation help us reduce the time and cost by providing smooth working of these services.
