Answer 1: High blood pressure was first observed in the 1800s, which is when it was associated with strokes. However, during this time, hypertension (high bp) wasn’t the concerning problems, but it was the strokes that were thought to precede hypertension. Since hypertension and strokes were both of high frequency in a tested population, the ideal was that strokes were the cause of hypertension, which is the other way around. The distribution of the disease was generally linked to people with heart problems and strokes, therefore they determined that it was the problem. Long term studies were used to determine that the cause, which was high blood pressure had preceded the effect, strokes and heart problems.

Answer 2: Recommendations about strokes probably hadn’t gone too far until they had realized that lower blood pressures lead to lower frequency of strokes, which is where the evidence based recommendations came in play. Then recommendations of lower salt intake and weight loss showed an improvement in individuals, ask the risk of these was extremely low because it will only make your body better. However, some individuals were given medications that were continued for years to even their entire life. The recommendations of these interventions went into implantation by high risk groups after analyzing low risk and low cost, compared to treatment after strokes and individuals with diabetes looking for treatment. The evaluation of these implementations was that there was an extreme reduction in strokes and deaths.
