*Pain is defined as :

The unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.

• Pain is highly personal; and subjective experience

Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is

*Nociception is the detection of tissue damage by specialized transducers attached to "A delta" and "C" peripheral fibers.

A nociceptor is a primary afferent neuron that is preferentially sensitive to a noxious stimulus

*Acute Pain :

• short-lived
• warning of injury
• presents symptoms at the tissue level
• resolves when healed
• the body emits a reflex response through the spinal cord

*Chronic pain :

• pain lasting for more than 6 months of expected healing time
• symptoms may be psychological and can interfere with daily activities
• concern when treating: narcotic dependence

*Sub-acute pain :

Pain that lasts longer than healing time would account for, but whose pain is not so long standing that it has caused significant behavioral and psychological alterations

A “differential diagnosis” is distinguishing a condition as the potential cause of a patient's illness. Recognizing the cause of the patient's condition was of vital importance because the patient needed appropriate interventions in a timely fashion.  The process of weighing the probability of one disease versus that of other diseases possibly accounting for a patient's illness.
