A laxative maybe give or enema maybe given once. Old or debilitated patients should be carefully monitored during administration of multiple enemas, which can fatigue the patient and increase in loss of electrolytes. In patients with bleeding and diarrhoea, the bowel preparation may not be ordered by the health care provider.
Enema should not be more than one per 24 hrs as it leads to many complications.
