Developmental Researchers no longer view the neonate as a helpless creature, but as a remarkably competent, developing human being. What do you think are the implications of this changing viewpoint for methods of child rearing and child care?
Newborn babies and infants, especially the first few months, are very fagile and they fully depend on their caretakers. Evolutionary thinkers viewed the neonates as helpess creatures. But the recent studies under developmental research show that they are no longer a helpless creature but remarkably competent developing humanbeing. The studies show that the babies are born with the knowledge of physical environment and some expectations about the external object( intuitive physics). Also neonates are social creatures and they can relate the information from the surrounding loved ones.
Child rearing and child care practices based on this changing concept : as the child born with intuitive physics knowledge, it is recommended that parents can interact with the newborn baby more, even if the parent is thinking that the babies can't understand anything. But as soon as birth happens the neonates starts to learn. Infants are able to understand the facial expressions and changes in the surroundings. Therefore interacting and playing with the child is necessary. Intuitive physics ability in the babies can be promoted by interaction with the child and by encouraging the child to interact with the objects.
Neonates are social creatures and they develop a sense of caring and seek relationships that develop their trust towards others. According to Erick Erickson the main psychosocial goal of neonates or infants are trust development. If the period is unsuccessful the chid might develop mistrust to the surrounding. Parents or care takers are obliged to do give adequate care and warmth for the baby. So that he develops trust in him. Neonates also can understand the communication gaps and the chances of social violations. Be available for the baby and start interpersonal encounter with the baby and improve the social environment of the baby.
