IRB is institutional review board. It is also known as independent ethics committee. An IRB/IEC reviews the appropriateness of the clinical trial protocol as well as the risks and benefits to study participants.

Role of the IRB is as below:-

  • Protects the rights and benefits of the research subjects.
  • Approves the research
  • Rejects/ disapproves the research
  • Conducts the reviews for research
  • Conduct Continuing reviews
  • Informs the investigators regarding IRB decisions
  • Observes or verify the changes
  • Suspend or terminates the approval etc
