Anorexiants :
Anorexiants are the drugs that decrease the appetite by acting on the brain. It is short term adjuncts to weight loss for severely obese individuals. These drugs have a stimulant effect on hypothalamic and limbic region which controls satiety.
pharmacodynamics :
Anorexiants are sympathomimetic amines - non amphetamine but chemically and pharmacologically related .
It acts by release and reuptake of norepinephrine and or dopamine that are released from storage sites in nerve terminals in the lateral hypothalamic feeding center.

The drugs should not be used in poorly controlled hypertension and major eating disorder .
These are cautionly used in alcohol dependency .
The drugs should not be used in history of coronary artery diseases , congestive heart failure , arrhythmia , stroke , renal and hepatic diseases.

Mainly used to reduce appetite.
These drugs are short term adjunct to caloric restriction for weight loss.
Dose of anorexiants :
The recommended dose of sibutramine is 10 mg per day and after increasing the weight of the person the dose may be increased to 15mg/dl.
The dose of phentermine is 8 mg orally 3 times a day before meals or
15 to 37.5 mg orally once in a week before or 1 to 2 hours after food.
