Answer #1

One specific application of microbial products are, using them as antibiotics. Antibiotics are those that are produced by one microbe, which prevents the growth of the other microbes. It is a protective mechanism of microbes. Particularly, certain bacteria and fungus produce antibiotics that are used in the treatment of different infectious diseases.

These antibiotics act by preventing one particular mechanism for the survival of bacteria, which is absent or not necessary for the host cell survival. Means, the antibiotics only kill their target bacteria, while allowing the host cell to survive.

Example: Bacteria have to synthesize folate, so inhibition of this enzyme DHPS inhibits the bacterial growth. Sulfamethoxazole competes with the PABA (para amino benzoic acid) and inhibits the synthesis of dihydro folic acid in bacteria. Humans obtain folic acid through the diet. So, the sulphonamide antibiotics do not affect the human cells (i.e. safe for humans).

The term “bacteriostatic” refers to the agents that prevent the growth of bacteria (but not killing). Bactericidal agents are those that kill the microbes. Bactericidal antibiotics are most effective than bacteriostatic because they immediately reduce the bacterial load. The bacteriostatic agents require the phagocytes to clear off the bacteria after they inhibit their growth, which requires an active immune response that may not be possible in all patients.
