It is a bad idea to use a syringe to transfer blood in between the specimens because it can increase the risk of hemolysis, and can also cause the needle sticks.

Needle sticks are a major concern in the medical facilities. After using, the needles must be immediately disposed of in biohazardous disposable waste containers to avoid needle stick injuries.

In case of accidental needle sticks, the incident must be immediately reported to a supervisor. As per the standard protocol, the test for bloodborne pathogens should be done immediately and also the follow-up care is necessary, the phlebotomist needs appropriate counseling.

The QA procedure for accidental needle sticks includes monitoring and counting the number of accidental punctures done and instituting the necessary training or equipment modifications as required to avoid frequent accidents.
