APRN - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

APRN is a registered nurse with a post graduation in nursing( Masters degree in nursing)

a) States: New York and California

Nurse Practice Acts:

According to California Board of Registered nursing, nursing practice act ( NPA) is the body of California law that helps the Board to set the responsibilities and scope of practices for Registered Nurses ( RN).

New York: Nursing practice Act clearly tells the rights and responsibilities of a nurse. Article 139 ; Nursing ,under Education Law contains the details regarding the definition of practice of nursing, Certification for different title, educational requirements etc.

b) the APRN title

California: An advanced practice registered nurse can work under following title according to their advanced specialty area and certification:

* Nurse- Midwife

* Nurse Practitioner

* Clinical Nurse Specialist

* Mental health Nurse/ Psychiatric nurse

* Nurse Anesthetist

NEW YORK: An APRN can work under any of the 4 titles according to their advanced knowledge acquired through the certification and post graduation speciality.

* Clinical Nurse Specialist

* Nurse-Midwife

* Nurse Practitioner

* Nurse Anesthetist

c) Scope of Practice , d) educational requirements

* Clinical Nurse Specialist

In New York, a CNS should have Masters degree in Clinical Nurse Speciality and she also should have valid, current RN license of New York and registration and also she should be registered in New York State Education Department ( NYSED) and should obtain the Certification.  

Scope: CNS can practice in the area of Mental health, pediatrics , Oncology and adult health.

California: A nurse who done Masters in Clinical Nursing Speciality , and should have course work in research, Education, consultation and expert in Clinical nursing practice can obtain Certification. Credentials can be obtained from any of the following organization:

* American nurses Credentialing center

* Oncology Nursing Cerification Corporation

* American Association of Critical- care nurses

American Association

Nurse Practitioner:

New York : To do the practice, NYSED Certification and registration should be there. Eligible candidates should have a current, valid New York license for RN, Graduation in nurse practitioner programme( NYSED approved ), certificate in pharmacotherapy programme.

Scope: Many areas of scope are there for Nurse Practitioner such as Gerentology, Obstetrics, family health, School health, Psychiatry, palliative care, holistic care etc.

California: A nurse who done Masters degree in nursing, should complete an in - state programme recognized by California Board. Clinical competency of the RN will be verified by a licensed physician and licensed nurse practitioner. She can obtain Certification from ;

American nurse Credentialing Center( ANCC)

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners ( AANP)

American Association of Critical- care nurses (AACN).

Nurse midwife

In New York, NYSED license and registration should be obtained by RN, who should pass the ( American Midwifery Certification Board exam, have a post graduation in nurse- midwifery and good conduct.

California: After completing approved California programme, a nurse can obtain California nurse- Midwife Certification. She should be recent graduate or a nurse with previous five years of eexperience.

American Midwifery Certification Board also provides Certification for Nurse- Midwife .

Nurse Anesthetist:

In New York, no special license for Nurse Anesthetist. RN who have experience an advanced education can administer anesthetic agents intravenously. According to NYSDE, nurse Anesthetist should complete nurse anesthetia degree or masters programme.

In California, A Nurse Anesthetist get Certification from Council of Certification/ Recertification of nurse anesthetist, after attending an accredited programme on anesthetia.

National Certification through ' National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetist ( NBCRNA).
