Sue Johnson, a 34-year-old white female, is prescribed 500 mg of amoxicillin to be taken by mouth three times a day for her recurrent bacterial infection. The bottle of amoxicillin available to the medical assistant reads 250 mg per tablet. The medical assistant cannot find anyone to double check her calculations so she proceeds to tell the patient she will need to take 4 tablets by mouth per day. What should the correct dosage be? How many tablets should the patient take for each dose? If you are given an order to administer a medication to your patient, what guidelines will you follow to make sure your dosage calculations are correct? If you give an incorrect dose, what should you do? What education should you give your patient about amoxicillin and taking her medication? Be specific in your answers.
