START triage method

Simple triage and rapid treatment method used by first responders to classify victims during a mass casualties based on the severity of their injury.

These includes following four categories

  • Immediate (red)
  • Delayed (yellow)
  • Walking wounded/minor (green)
  • Deceased/expectant (black)

1. Immediate

  • Respiratory rate more than 30 per min
  • Radial pulse is absent, or capillary refill is over 2 seconds;
  • Unable to follow simple commands

2. Delayed

  • Respiratory rate < 30 per minute;
  • Radial pulse is present , or capillary refill < 2 seconds;
  • follow simple commands

3. Minor

  • Patient is able to walk.
  • patient with minor injuries.
  • Status unlikely to deteriorate.

4. Expectant

  • Pain relief should be provided
  • Patient is unlikely to survive given severities of injuries
