An office worker has had a record of frequent absence. He has used all his vacation and sick-leave days, and has frequently requested additional leave without pay. His supervisor and co-workers have expressed great frustration because his absenteeism has caused bottlenecks in paperwork, created low morale in the office, and required others to do his work in addition to their own. However, the individual believes he is entitled to take his earned time and additional time off without pay. Is he right?

Yes. He is having the right to take earned leave and additional leave without pay. But the way of taking leave without concerning about the burden of works on colleagues is wrong. He is responsible for his scheduled work and he has to complete it priorly before taking leave. He has to make sure that his work has been completed and not putting a burden on coworkers.

He must take the responsibility of placing someone in his place on his absence to take care of his work after discussing with his higher officials. St.Augustine and St.Aquinas also believed the same that he should talk with the management in appointing of someone in his place when he goes for a long vacation leave. The management should take the necessary arrangement to cover his work on time.

The management has failed to notify him that how the company and coworkers being affected by his absenteeism. The management should make him realize the whole situation. Even after, he is thinking about himself and not bothering about the company, then necessary action should be taken on him. This may avoid the bottleneck situation in the office. Moreover, everyone should be responsible for their work. Teamwork is necessary for the succeed of any organization.
