Answer #1

Nitroglycerine belongs to the nitrate class of drugs. It is used to treat angina pectoris or chest pain caused due to insufficient oxygen delivery to heart.

It causes vasodilation that improves blood and oxygen delivery to heart. It also reduces the afterload and preload thus reducing the blood pressure.

Nitroglycerine can be given sublingually or as a transdermal patch, intravenous and orally.

The transdermal patch should be applied to clean and dry body area and is applied either on chest, arm, shoulder or back.

The nursing teaching about nitroglycerine transdermal patch includes that a new patch should be applied every morning and removed at night for 8-10 hours. This prevents tolerance to the patch. The patch can be worn while bathing also.

So the most important nursing teaching will be : apply a new patch every morning.
