Gilbert Martin is a 53-year-old Hispanic male who is married to Helen Martin. Mr. Martin has a son from a previous marriage and a step-daughter whom he has raised since she was 3. Mr. Martin's father has recently passed away, so he has been helping his mother manage her affairs. Mr. Martin works as a local delivery truck driver for a construction company. His job includes assisting with the loading and unloading of construction materials. Mr. Martin considers himself to be in good health with the exception of chronic back pain. Mr. Martin also has hyperlipidemia for which he takes atorvastatin (Lipitor) 20 mg/day. Mr. Martin sees his primary care provider once a year for triglyceride and liver function tests and has been encouraged to follow a low-fat diet.

1) Non pharmacological interventions to reduce chronic back pain:

Many non - pharmacological interventions are available for chronic back pain. It includes exercises, complementary and alternative therapies ( such as acupuncture, massage, and mind body interventions) , psychological therapies ( cognitive, behavioral and operant therapy),physical techniques like traction, superficial heat or cold application, back supports), and multidisciplinary and rehabilitation therapies.

2) The factors that face Mr. Martin at risk for exacerbation of his back problems includes as he is truck driver, and his job is loading and unloading of construction material i.e ., due to lifting of weights.

And Mr. Martin has hyperlipidemia, however abnormal triglycerides, HDL levels leads to back pain .

Old - age people are also at risk of developing back pain.

Diet & work status / occupation play an important role for back pain.

3) Stress in Mr. Martin's life may be affecting his lower back pain:

Everyday stresses have a huge impact on body and chronic pain. When Martin stressed, his breathing patterns change and cause strain and tension in the mid - back, lower half of the back muscles. The muscles affect flexibility and posture. During stress usually individuals become sedentary and they stretch and exercise less.
