Advocacy begins with the art of influencing others (politics) to adopt a specific course of action (policy) to solve a societal problem and is accomplished by building relationships with appropriate policy makers—the individuals or groups that determine a specific course of action to be followed by a government or institution to achieve a desired end (policy outcome). This can be done in many ways. Types of advocacy include actions on behalf of clients served by nursing, especially vulnerable populations; activities of the nursing profession itself; work to develop needed health policies or revise existing policies; and actions related to the community.
