Describe refraction and how it the lenses of our eyes focus light.

Refraction is the phenomenon of bending of light rays when it changes the medium. When the light rays change the medium then it bends towards the normal to the boundary between two mediums.

The lens in our eyes is a transparent biconvex structure that helps the refracted light to focus on the retina with the help of cornea.

What are the common problems that occur in this system?

Refractive errors occur when light is not properly focused onto the retina. It is of four types – myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia

Myopia – it is also known as near-sightedness. People affected with this are not able to see distant things clearly, hence near-sightedness. It is corrected by the use of concave lens that causes divergence of light before reaching the cornea.

Hyperopia – it is also known as far-sightedness. The persons are not able to see nearby objects clearly. It is corrected by the use of convex lenses that causes light to converge before they reach the cornea.

Presbyopia – it is age-related disorder and mainly difficulty in near vision.

Astigmatism – blur vision. Corrected through cylindrical lenses.
