A 70-kg adult patient is being treated for iron poisoning. He is administered desferrioxamine mesilate initially at a dose of 12 mg/kg per h to be reduced by 25% after 6 h. How much desferrioxamine mesilate will this patient have received after 12 hours of therapy?

Weight of the patient = 70 kg

Desferrioxamine mesilate initially at a dose of 12 mg/kg per

As per weight of the patient required dose= 70 X 12= 840 mg per hr.

For initial 6 hours the amount will be= 840 X6=5040 mg

As stated after after 6 hours reduce the dose 25 %

Means 25% of 840= 210 mg

hence the applicable dose per hr will be = 630 mg/hr

Hence for remaining 6 hous the amount of the drug deliverd will be= 630x6=3780 mg

Thus the patient have received dose/amount after 12 hours will be = 5040+3780

= 8820 mg or 8.820 g
