Bipolar disorder is considered to be a mental illness that is characterized by the low depressive moods to high maniac moods indicating bipolar nature of the disease. According to American phyciatric association bipolar disorder is of 4 types these are- bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, cyclothymic disorder and bipolar disorder due to substance abuse.

The two goals of treatment of bipolar disorder is to provide conventional focus on promoting stable mood, to bring the patient from maniac or depressive symptoms to stable mood. Other goals include prevention of relapse and reduction of subthreshold symptoms.
