Electronic medical records ( EMR)
An electronic collection of Patient's details about medical experiences, such as medications, surgery and any other health related informations is called Electronic Medical records. It is also called as Electronic health records .
Pros and cons of Electronic Medical records
Pros
* Legible and accurate data can be stored
* Eliminates the need for finding out or tracking down the previous medical records.
* Avoids data replications
* saves time, money and materials
* Easy extraction of medical data by physicians, insurers
Cons of EMR
* Hackers and cyber criminals can get unauthorised access to the client's data
* Acquisition and maintenance cost
* Frequent upgradation is needed for the system
Personal experience
Even though hospitals are following Electronic Medical records system, now a days, some hospitals still following paper records also . When ( I) went through the paper records, of a particular client, most of the details are in poor legibility.Ward sister- in charge explained about the importance of Electronic Medical records. She told that 'many medication errors happened due to Poor legibility and now with EMR , even it is easy to find out the previous medical details of a client.
When ( my grand pa) got admitted in the hospital, with a severe attack of dyspnoea, ( I was unaware about the proper medications and treatment , he undergone), doctor accessed his EMR and found out that he is in treatment of hypertension and he was an asthmatic person. It helped the doctor to diagnose and decide his condition and prescribe the treatment.
