There are various nursing care facilities in a given locality, some facilities have only housing and housekeeping, but many also provide personal care and medical services. Many facilities offer special programs for people. Facility based long-term care services include board and care homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities.
Care homes, also called residential care facilities or group homes, are small private facilities, usually with fewer residents. Rooms may be private or shared. Residents receive personal care and meals and have staff available around the clock.
Assisted living is for people who need help with daily care, having facilities of few levels of care that are offered, with residents paying more for higher levels of care. Residents usually live in their own apartments or rooms and share common areas. They have access to many services, including up to three meals a day, these assistance with personal care, help with medications, housekeeping, and laundry, 24 hour supervision, security, and on site staff; and social and recreational activities.
Nursing homes, or alternatively know as skilled nursing facilities, provide a wide range of health and personal care services. Their services focus on medical care more than assisted living facilities. These services include nursing care, 24 hour supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities. Rehabilitation services, occupational, and speech therapy, are also available.
Some people prefer to stay at a nursing home for a short time after being in the hospital. After they recover, they go home. Most nursing home residents live there permanently as they have ongoing physical or mental conditions that require constant care and supervision.
Nursing homes tend to have a negative aptitude with aging, but sometimes they really do make sense for a senior's own health and safety. It can be difficult to leave a loved one's care in the hands of a perfect stranger, but thinking about a nursing home for a family member, or self, one want to know the many pros and cons of moving and living there full time.
In today’s busy schedules, and due to lack of medical training leads to declining health of our senior family members when we are not able to care for them. When living in a nursing home, your loved ones are offered round the clock, full time care by qualified healthcare professionals and talented doctors. Should something go wrong in the middle of the night, there are typically nurses on staff that are available to come and help in an instant. During regular daytime hours, most nursing homes have highly qualified doctors for senior care that you wouldn't be able to provide yourself. This can provide a sense of reassurance to both you and your family members that your loved ones are being cared for properly at all hours of the day.
One of the important issues of a nursing home is the high cost of living. It can cost families thousands of dollars a year to put a senior family member into a nursing home, and it's often not an expense that the family can afford and is ready to handle. If parents have set aside part of their retirement savings to cover the costs of living in a nursing home, then there should be no an issue. But if that is not available, nursing homes may not be a feasible option for many families.
