Format: Introduction
Dell is an IT company. It sells server, laptops, mobiles, tablets, PC’s etc.
Techniques with Conclusion:
1. Location strategy: Dell applies the theory of manufacturing
oversees and keeping just-in-time inventory for manufacturing
activities. And hence, has a strategy to meet the customer
expectation both in term of quality and delivery time. It focuses
mainly on cluster structure of location strategy, where once Dell
receives online orders it contacts the nearby
suppliers/OEM’s/vendors for different components required for
manufacturing the product. And due to its close proximity with the
suppliers in 2 hours the different components are received at
Dell’s assembly unit. Doing this saves inventory cost and
geographical proximity as a part of location strategy helps in
gaining both cost leadership and differentiation (in terms of fast
delivery).
2. Layout strategy: Out of different layouts available in the
market, Dell focuses on product-oriented layout i.e. it is
organised around product. Dell has a “from to matrix” they have
their manufacturing centres in US and India. They only have
assembly unit, with no warehouse or inventory and shipping
department. Which means the area required for the office is less as
it has opened up with suppliers in both design and the production
processes, this eliminates the burden of hiring, reduces the cycle
time, reducing the cost to company and helps in providing
best-in-class products by collaborating with best-in-class
suppliers. For example: Dell has outsourced hardware from IBM,
which is well known in market for its hardware. This outsourcing
helps Dell to maximise efficiency and reduce the number of
workstations of departments and hence reduction in cycle
time.
3. Forecasting strategy: Dell has a push and pull inventory
strategy. This requires a more accurate forecasts to be done.
Customers demand helps in knowing in how to pull and increases the
sales further. Company first pushes different options to customer
to choose from in order to customise the product. And Dell chooses
to use push and pull strategy to follow just in time inventory in
collaboration with vendors by informing vendors about what to keep
in inventory based on studying the push and pull inventory strategy
of the company
4. Short Term Schedules: In order to deal with short term
schedules, the company has multiple vendors for a single component.
This helps in reducing the lead time required for the manufacturing
and hence helps in delivery the product to the customer
faster.
5. Supply Chain Management: Dell has implemented SCM very
effectively by introducing vendor management, cluster location
strategy, Just int time inventory. Doing this has reduced the total
cycle time without compromising on the quality. Dell has a supply
chain management model to provide customised products to the
customer which involves only suppliers, assembly unit at Dell and
logistic partners delivering to the End customer directly. Dell
focuses on having a strategic fit between efficient and responsive
SCM by emphasising on product customization and quicker delivery
time.
