Draw a graph to represent hiking 500 m from a campground in 10 min, stopping for 5 min hiking another 400 m away from the campground in 8 min, and then hiking back to the campground along the same trail in 15 min. Where appropriate, assume you are travelling at a constant rate on each part of the trip. (5) Then, determine the rate for each portion of the graph. 1

we have to find the rate of each portion of the graph

we know that,

rate = change in value of y divided by change in the value of x.

For the first part 500 meters was traveled in 10 minutes hence we can say that,

rate = 500/10 = 50 meter per minute

For the second part 0 meter was traveled in 5 minutes hence we can say that,

rate = 0/5 = 0 meter per minute

For the third part 400 meter was traveled in 8 minutes hence we can say that,

rate = 400/8 = 50 meter per minute

For the fourth part 900 meter was traveled in 15 minutes hence we can say that,

rate = 900/15 = 60 meter per minute

But we can see that distance is decreasing with time hence we can say that rate = -60 meter per minute
