A solution of ethanol is pumped to a vessel 25 m above

a reference level through a 25-mm-inside-diameter steel

pipe at a rate of 10 m3

/h. The length of pipe is 30 m and

contains two elbows with friction equivalent to 20 diameters

each. Compute the power requirements of the pump.

Solution properties include density of 975 kg/m3 and

viscosity of 4 3 1024 Pa s.

A pumped-storage hydroelectric plant generates high value electricity during peak demand times, by allowing water (density 1,000 kg/m3) to run through a pipe from an elevated reservoir through a bank of turbines and then into a lower level reservoir. It then uses low-cost, off-peak electricity to pump the water back up into the upper reservoir The water surface in the very large upper reservoir (A) is 600 m above datum whilst that in the very large lower reservoir (B) is...
