Given that quality is a relative concept, how does a manager ever know if the quality level is optimal? Total quality management has gotten a lot of attention over the last several years. How do you account for the phenomenon? Do you think it is justified or just a lot of hype about nothing new?
Usually the quality of the product is an outcome of the market expectation. A manager sets the quality through various observation of the competitors and the product expectation. However, there is always competition in the market to produce superior quality product than the market standard while balancing the cost. This was the main driver for ideologies as total quality management.
As competition between companies grew, the organizations began to attempt various ways to increase the quality of their products and services while keeping the same cost. This is where they began experimenting and the idea to improve quality at every step of operation came into practice. This is a method of continuous improvement and quality management.
I think it is justified as it reduces the overall cost of quality and cost reduction is a very important way to stay relevant in the market today. This process of total quality management also helps the organizations create higher quality products.

Keynesian vs. Classical 1. We already know that politicians disagree on how to fix the economic problems. It's not just politicians, economists also disagree. When the recession hit back in December 2007, first President Bush then President Obama responded quickly with stimulus packages that included tax cuts and spending increases. Several economists such as Paul Krugman and Robert Reich backed this approach as they believed Keynesian policies would restore the insufficient demand and bring the economy back to full employment...
Lindell Manufacturing embarked on an ambitious quality program that is centered on continual improvement. This improvement is operationalized by declining quality costs from year to year. Len Smith, manager of Lindell’s Boise plant, felt obligated to do everything he could to provide this increase to his employees. Accordingly, he has decided to take the following actions...
INTERPRETING THE REAL LIFE STORY: Karen’s Experience I always disliked how my skin would get pale in the winter because I know I looked better with a tan. During the summer, my friends and I would lie out by the pool in our bathing suits. We wouldn’t even mind if we got a little sunburned, because we would just say “the burn will turn into a tan!” Before our senior prom, we all went to the tanning salon and used...
"What do you mean, you don't know who he is?" asked Dr. Bridewell, the head of the Oakbrook Hospital Renal Unit. He was unconscious when the police brought him to the ER. We started the IV, stopped his bleeding and patched him up. But he still hasn't recovered consciousness. The police think it was a hit and run driver. Dr. Kathy Mc Dowel spoke in a precise, matter of fact voice. Dr. Bridewell always frightened her, but she was determined...
