Suppose that someone has created a new test to predict someone’s likelihood for success in graduate school. They claim the test is predictive because it measures perseverance. They define perseverance as continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. They believe perseverance is positively related to the constructs of conscientiousness and self-control, and negatively related to impulsivity.

1)Criterion Validity assesses whether a test reflects a certain set of abilities. It can be measured in 2 ways

a)  Concurrent validity measures the test against a benchmark test and high correlation indicates that the test has strong criterion validity.

b)Predictive validity is a measure of how well a test predicts abilities. It involves testing a group of subjects for a certain construct and then comparing them with results obtained at some point in the future.

In the given test, criterion validity can be tested by co.paring its result with an external benchmark. If correlation between 2 is high then test can be said to be high in criterion validity.

2) Content validity is the estimate of how much a measure represents every single element of a construct.

components of success includes various personality factors like perseverance , low impulsivity, discipline and conscientiousness etc. We should look if all the to structure of success are included in test or not. If it is , then high content validity.

3) Construct validity defines how well a test or experiment measures up to its claims. A test designed to measure perseverance must only measure perseverance.

a)Convergent validity tests that constructs that are expected to be related are, in fact, related.

b)Discriminant validity tests that constructs that should have no relationship do, in fact, not have any relationship.

Here , impulsivity will be measured for discriminate validity. If low impulsivity is related to high success then test has high discriminant validity

Conscientiousness will be measured to show high correlation with success. If test shows positive correlation between two then it has high convergent validity.
