Answer #1

Cyber security and functional safety are part of industrial security and is needed to manage risk in every field of life whether it is IT related , automobile industries , service sector , power industries etc.

It acts as a risk controlling barrier which stops any adverse outcome.

CYBER SECURITY means to prevent any intentional or unintentional attack intended to cause damage to the process for example hacking data , system or trying to damage...... Now as electronic systems is everywhere hence cyber security is a important tool

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY is to ensure operation in any event for ex in case of errors , environmental effects , hardware failures etc...... It protects the process

With increasing penetration of technology both cyber security and functional safety is need of the hour.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CYBER SECURITY AND FUNCTIONAL SAFETY

  1. Cyber security refers to unwanted or illegal penetration problem whereas functional safety focus on the result of an event
  2. Cyber security keeps the environment  affecting the process whereas functional safety focus on keeping process from affecting environment
  3. Cyber security requires subjective approach as it is unpredictable whereas functional safety needs objective approach in dealing with all possible scenarios
  4. Cyber security is against an unknown problem whereas functional safety depends on the process itself its designing , materials etc.
  5. Cyber security is a evercahnging field as new problem arises every second whereas functional safety is based on process hence a fixed approach is required until any changes in process itself.
  6. Cyber security level is unrelated to the process and depends on severity of harm whereas functional safety depends on the process and its use.
  7. Cyber security requires attention on simpler things as simple process is more prone to attacks whereas functional safety focus on the complex part of the process as simple parts will be safer

SIMILARITY BETWEEN CYBER SECURITY AND FUNCTIONAL SAFETY

  1. Cyber security and functional safety both requires protection
  2. Cyber security and functional safety is not a one time thing and is evolving with time
  3. Cyber security and functional safety both are interlinked
  4. Cyber security and functional safety both has unintended consequences
  5. Cyber security and functional safety both require risk finding , its assessment and then effective control
  6. Cyber security and functional safety both needs continously monitoring

For example

  • An automatic car
  1. hacking of its control without drivers consent is a cyber security problem which can result in a high risk situation for car , its driver and sorrounding environment.
  2. we want it to function safely but if its brake fails then it is a functional safety issue which needs to be rectified as soon as possible otherwise will cause damage
  • College Campus
  1. Cyber security is needed to protct sensitive data from hackers , identity theft etc.
  2. Functional safety is needed to keep data hardware safe , keep an eye on eye on school network for any voilent content , any threat , suspicious behaviour , etc
