The Empirical Rule or the 3-sigma rule states that for a Normal Probability Distribution, most of the data would lie within 3 standard deviations of the mean.
The rule depicts that :

  • 68% of the data will lie within the first standard deviation(sigma),
  • 95% within the first two standard deviations(2sigma), and
  • 99.7% will fall within the first three standard deviations(3sigma) of the distribution's mean.
