FUNCTIONAL GROUPS IDENTIFICATION LAB

Professor Burton decided to select two unknowns from Group 1 (299 & 399) and two unknowns from Group 2 (499 & 699). Below are the descriptions of his observations/results for each unknown.

UNKNOWN #: 299

2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine Test: solution remains colorless

Fehling’s Test: solution remains colorless

Lucas test: observed solution in 5-min intervals for 20 min., the solution remains

                      colorless

Tollen’s test: solution remains colorless

Iodoform Test: solution remains colorless

Bordwell-Wellman Test: solution became quite opaque and a blue-green cast appeared

UNKNOWN #: 399

2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine Test: solution remains colorless

Fehling’s Test: solution remains colorless

Lucas test: solution became cloudy immediately when reagent was added

Tollen’s test: solution remains colorless

Iodoform Test: solution remains colorless

Bordwell-Wellman Test: no rxn was observed

UNKNOWN #: 499

2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine Test: solution changed to a yellow-orange color with some

                                                     precipitation

Fehling’s Test: solution changed to a dark red precipitate

Lucas test: no rxn was observed

Tollen’s test: a silver mirror film appeared inside the test tube

Iodoform Test: no rxn was observed

Bordwell-Wellman Test: no rxn was observed

UNKNOWN #: 699

2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine Test: solution changed to an orange color precipitate

Fehling’s Test: no rxn was observed

Lucas test: no rxn was observed

Tollen’s test: no rxn was observed

Iodoform Test: solution formed a yellow precipitate

Bordwell-Wellman Test: no rxn was observed

Choose two of the unknowns -- one from Group 1 and one from Group 2. Using Professor Burton’s descriptions, identify his results as positive or negative for each test. Then, identify what your unknowns are? Fill in the data charts on your lab report sheet. Complete all parts of the lab report sheet including the questions.
