Oxidation with periodate
Periodate is a strong oxidation agent. Periodate oxidation agent with vicinal (adjacent) diol gives cleaved two carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone). This reaction is very useful for constitutional analysis of sugars.
The given compounds have a hydroxymethyl group adjacent to a carbonyl function. So oxidative cleavage gives formaldehyde and acid. Further this product undergoes oxidative cleavage gives carbon dioxide and acetaldehyde.
