Do you think organizations should have enforceable policies addressing shadow IT risks?
First of all before commenting on this we should know what shadow IT actually means. These days there are no network restrictions within the organization and mobile data has also become chepaer .The advancement of various cloud services has also increased. So what the employees are actually doing is they are downloading various untrusted and uncertified software just to complete their work without thinking about the sensitivity of data which could lead to a large number of threats. This is known as Shadow IT.
So yes the organizations should have enforceable policies addressing shadow IT risks because it can lead to data theft and misuse. An effective policy should be made and guidelines must be addressed on how to limit the risks of Shadow IT and how to prevent ShadowIT.There must be control over the network and the installation of third party applications must be prevented.Any third party application must be allowed to install only with the prior permission of IT department. The policies should let know people what are the risks and challeneges concerning those untrusted applications and how they can even affect their personal privacy,
A strong policy must be made so that the reasons concerning the installation are known. Some of the common reasons are when the internally provideed applications are not effective and upto the standards or they are very much complex and hard to use.
