Edwin is charged with a crime. Almost all federal courts and some state courts would not hold him liable if, at the time of the offense, as a result of a mental disease or defect, he lacked substantial capacity to obey the law and to appreciate​

The above statement is true. If it is proved that at the time of doing crime Edwin was not in his senses or was a case of ental disease or defect, then according to the Law laid down, Edwin could not be charged with a crime.

But for this to happen strong evidence is required about Edwin's ill mental health at the time of crime.
