The 5 major federal welfare programs are:

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF)

Medicaid

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Earned Income Tax Credit. (EITC)

3b.

TANF: It assists families with children where the parents cannot provide for the basic needs of the family. It is a time limited program.

Medicaid: It helps with medical costs for people who have limited access to resources and income. Medicaid recipients must be US citizens or qualifies non-citizens.

SNAP: It provides food purchasing assistance for low- income US citizens. It is the largest nutrition program and is the main key of the social safety net for the low-income American population.

SSI: IT is a program which pays benefits to people with disability (children and adults) who have limited income and resources.

EITC: It is a refundable tax credit for low income and medium income working individuals and couples who have children.
