A guidance counselor claims that the high school students in a college preparation program have higher ACT scores than those in a general program. The sample mean ACT scores for 37 high school students in a college prep program is 22.7 and assume the population standard deviation is 3.5. The sample mean ACT scores for 35 high school students in a general prep program is 21.1. Assume the population standard deviation is 4.9. At  = 0.02 , test the counselor’s claim. • Suppose 1 represents the mean ACT score of all college prep students • Suppose  2 represents the mean ACT score of all general prep students

1). State the hypothesis and label which represents the claim: : H 0 : H a

2). Specify the level of significance  =

3). Sketch the appropriate distribution, find and label the Critical Value(s) in Statdisk to 3 decimal places, and shade in  to indicate the Rejection Region(s).

4). Calculate the test statistic. Label this appropriately as Z or t.

5). Decision:

6). Write a statement to interpret the decision in the context of the original claim

A high school guidance counselor hypothesized that class rank may have an effect on number of schools to which her college-prep students apply. She draws eight students at random from the top, the middle, and the bottom thirds of the senior class and compares the number of colleges to which the selected students had submitted an application. She also hypothesizes that gender may affect the number of schools to which her college-prep students apply. How can she find out if...

A researcher wants to determine whether high school students who attend an SAT preparation course score significantly different on the SAT than students who do not attend the preparation course. For those who do not attend the course, the population mean is 1050 (? = 1050). The 16 students who attend the preparation course average 1150 on the SAT, with a sample standard deviation of 300.
