The given sugar is a 5 carbon containing molecule. This type of Sugars are called as pentoses.

Sugars having CO group are ketoses and those having CHO group are aldoses.

The sugar given in the question is an aldose.

The number always starts from the carbon atom which is nearest to CO/CHO group.
