For Drosophila, let’s consider three genes a, b, and c. We know where a and b are located, and have a nice idea about c. You conduct a three-point cross to figure it out for sure. We’ll use a, b, & c to refer to the three mutants, and + to refer to the wild-types. Here are the progeny counts from a heterozygote by homozygous mutant wild-type: a, b, c: 770 +, +, +: 384 a, +, +: 80 +, b, c: 86 +, b, +: 304 a, +, c: 292 +, +, c: 12 a, b, +: 16 a) What are the order of the genes on the chromosome and the map distances between them?

Solve problem number 21 in your text, which also involves a three-point cross (p. 146; note that the
total should be 223, not 213). What are the order of the genes on the chromosome and the map
distances between them? Note that we used a cis arrangement for all three genes in the heterozygote
from three-point cross above (#6). That might not always be the case (the heterozygote might be in
trans arrangement.

Answer #1

A) The greater number are of parental type offspring and the lowest number of double cross over type offspring.

We know that during double cross over, the middle gene is swapped between the homologous chromosome.

Now the parental types are a b c / +++

And the double cross over type is ++c and ab+

When we compare the parental and double cross over type, when we found that c gene is swapped. Hence the c gene is in the middle.

Order of gene. Is a c b.

B) The genetic distance is calculated by( SCO+ DCO)/ total × 100

Total individuals are 1944

The genetic distance between A and C is

a cb Ħ 80 a + + + c b + + + 86= {(80+86+12+16)/1944}×100= 9.979 or 9.98 centiMorgan.

The genetic distance between c and b is:

a cb Ħ a C + + + b 292 + + + 304

={ (292+304+12+16)/1944}×100= 32.098 or 32.1centiMorgan.

The genetic map is:

precu 22.1 cm. 9.98CM | 32.1 CM.
