Answer #1

At design level there are two choices for the local oscillator frequency:

fLO=fRF+fIFfLO=fRF+fIF (high-side injection) or fLO=fRF−fIFfLO=fRF−fIF (low-side injection)

Usually for medium wave AM receivers and FM receivers the frequency of the oscillator is higher than the desired RF frequency (fLO=fRF+fIFfLO=fRF+fIF). Since the oscillator is implemented with a fixed inductor and a variable capacitor, with this choice the capacitor change is well within the realm of possibility.

A low-frequency oscillator (LFO) is an electronic oscillator that generates a frequency below approximately 20 Hz. This term is typically used in the field of audio synthesizers, to distinguish it from an audio frequency oscillator. An audio oscillator produces frequencies in the audio range about 16 hz to 20 hz
