Answer #1

1.)

By snell's law,

n1*sin(x1) = n2*sin(x2)

here, n1 = refractive index of air = 1

x1 = angle of incidence = 23 deg

n2 = refractive index of water = 1.33

x2 = angle of refraction in water = ??

So,

1*sin(23 deg) = 1.33*sin(x2)

x2 = arcsin[sin(23 deg)/1.33]

x2 = 17.08 deg

2.)

Since when total internal reflection occurs then

angle of refraction is equals to 90 deg

So, by snell's law,

n1*sin(x1) = n2*sin(90 deg)

here, n1 = 1.5 ; n2 = 1.4

x1 = critical angle = ??

So, 1.5*sin(x1) = 1.4*1

sin(x1) = 1.4/1.5

x1 = arcsin(1.4/1.5)

x1 = 68.96 deg
