GEOGRAPHY HYPOTHESIS

  • Geography Hypothesis states that prosperity among the countries are influenced by the differences in geography, climate and ecology.

INSTITUTION HYPOTHESIS

  • Institutions hypothesis states that the institutions, that is , how the society has arranged their incentives to individuals and business that creates a difference in prosperity.
  • These institutions mainly include the formal and informal rules that governs the society.
  • institutions influence prosperitybecause, different socities have different institutions, different types of incentives - which determines the degree in which the socities accumulate their factors of production and technology.

GEOGRAPHY HYPOTHESIS VS INSTITUTION HYPOTHESIS.

  • In reality, geography hypothesis does not influence the prospertiy of countries.Studies shows that, countries near the tropic are poorer than the those in temperate areas. But this doesn't mean that it is because of the factors such as ecology or climate, thus which is not influenced by geography hypothesis.
  • The important factor that influences the country's prosperity is instituion hypothesis .
  • These institutions have an influence of the colonial history ,as in earlier times, the Europeans used to settle in temperate areas and developed institutions that contributed more to economic progress.
  • But we cannot completely say that georgraphy is unimportant, that it has some contributions to economic prosperity , even though it does not have a direct role.
  • Studies shows that 500 years ago, some ares were richer than others due to its geographic differences.
  • It had also affected the agriculture settlement and migration that can influence the prosperity.
