Why should tech companies be more concerned about free speech and less concerned about preventing the spread of misinformation, fake news and hate?
Tech (i.e., technology) companies have to rely on constant innovations in order to survive in this cut-throat competition. This can happen when these companies foster an open culture, where creativity and innovation thrive. If free speech is encouraged in these companies then employees will be willing to share their thoughts and ideas freely, which can lead to some wonderful innovations. Employees will be willing to open their hearts out and talk frankly. Such an open work environment leads to positive vibes and a motivated workplace, which leads to increased possibility of great innovations or new technology development. Examples of companies having open work environment are Google, 3M (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) Company and others. At Google, employees are free to devote a portion of their time to pursue projects of their own interest.
If on the other hand, tech companies put a curb on free speech for the fear of spread of misinformation, hate and others, then employees will be reluctant to share their thoughts and ideas with one another. There will be reduced chances of freewheeling of ideas and an environment of fear and mistrust may prevail. Thus there will not be much of creativity and innovation, which otherwise should have been the backbone of tech companies.
