Air Bag Obiective The purpose of this lab is to provide an opportunity to apply the principles of stoichiometry and the Gas Laws to a completely contrived problem. Unit conversions molarity calculations, limiting reagent considerations as well as volume calculations will be applied in the lab. Safety Considerations 1. However since it's inception, safety of occupants has always been an issue. So much so that today all new cars are mandated to have an 'active' (seat belts) and a passive' (air bag) restraining system. The development of the "air-bag" system required the combined efforts of both chemists and engineers. The basic idea behind them was simple enough: in the event of a collision, a plastic bag rapidly inflates with a gas, protecting the occupant from hitting the dashboard or the steering column. However there were and remain many imponderables concerning shape, size, weight, height etc.. of the occupant that they were to protect as well as the 'air-bag' system itself.
