Computer Science: Operating Systems - (File-System Interface)

Some systems automatically delete all user files when a user logs off or a job terminates, unless the user explicitly requests that they be kept; other systems keep all files unless the user explicitly deletes them. Discuss the relative merits of each approach.

Scenario-1: Following are the listed benefits

  • Deleting the files after the user logs off unless specifies will be effective for saving the space. As the system will not allow the saving of files that are unwanted. Hence, the system memory is saved.
  • Also, the efficiency of the system is increased as the system is simultaneously deleting the files that are not needed.

Scenario-2: Following are the listed benefits

  • There may occur chances when the user accidentally forgets to save the data, so in that case, it may be a huge loss to the user. So, without ensuring from the user, nothing is deleted.
  • It is also possible that the system may shut down because of any configuration issues or so, then the saving of data helps in recovering as the backup is always maintained.
