Ecotype is a genetically distinct geographic variety such as population or race within a specie. The genetic distinction is achieved due to development of adaptations to certain environmental conditions . e.g earthworm has different ecotypes. EPIGEIC( live in leaf litter), ENDOGEIC ( live and feed on soil), ANECIC( make vertical burrows).

An efficient method for detection of ecotype is to observe the adaptive differentiations in populations is the reciprocal transplant experiment. In this experiment, a genotype is allowed to grow on its home and a foreign environment alongwith a counterpart genotype derived from the foreign environment .
