The organizational issue of communication can be considered to be one of the most relevant and universal areas of the issue which leads to a loss in productivity and conflicts. Communication, especially free-flowing open channel communications are necessary for any organization in today’s day and age. We can say that open communication presents the employees and informal channel to communicate as and well necessary. While a formal structure is necessary, it is also restricted and therefore, in the matter of the company’s day to day functioning, it becomes a hindrance to the factor of productivity. When we need to follow the chain of commands for simple tasks, it results in the loss of motivation factor, expenditure of excess time as well as a number of other implication such as the medium, language and the manner of communication as well. A restricted channel of communication leads to conflict between the different individuals, ultimately resulting in the loss of productivity.

In order for a business to make the best possible use of the aspect of communication, interpersonal relationships have to be kept in mind. How an employee can benefit from a particular channel should be tested, rather than imposing a medium of communication the employees are not familiar with, or, comfortable performing. Employees should be trained in their use of both formal and informal communication, in order to discern the use of one over the other wherever necessary, as well as a company should adopt the use of an informal structure of communication, especially with the lower levels of hierarchy in order to allow better processes to be followed while the tasks are performed.
